Gialai is a mountainous province situated in the
northern part of Vietnam's central highland. It is
bordered by Kontum in the North, by Daklak in the South,
by Quang Ngai, Binh Định, Phu Yen in the East and by
Cambodia in the West. It is a natural area covering
approximately 16,000 km2 and It is divided into 13
districts and one town with the city of Pleiku as its
capital. Gialai has a population of more than a million
inhabitants of which 48% are from ethnic minorities groups
- mainly the Jarai and Bahnar people. At the elevation of
600 - 800m above sea level, the climate is mild and cool
with annual average temperature ranging between 23oc --
25oc. Gialai is an ideal holiday destination.
With convenient transport facilities
mean, visitors can come to Gialai by air via Pleiku
airport linking Gialai with the international airports at
Da Nang, Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City or overland via
highway No14 connecting Gialai with other central highland
provinces, Danang and HCM City; highway No19 and No 25
linking Gialai with the coastal provinces and the Heritage
Road .
As an area of outstanding natural
beauty with an abundance of interesting ecotourism
potentials, Gialai has charming natural landscapes of
primitive forest with abundant and varied fauna and flora,
imposing waterfalls, meandering rivers and large tranquil lake. This
natural beauty is further enhanced by many
rubber, tea and coffee plantations as well as national
hydro power projects considered to be great exploits of
the superb central highland region. Gialai is also the
land of ancient culture of the Jarai and Bahnar people,
archaeological sites and the culture of the Rong house,
stilted- houses, Tomb house, Tomb statues, traditional
gong ceremonies and Buffalo sacrifices. All of these
significant features have been preserved. Besides, Gialai
has a magnificent historic tradition with many well-known places classified as national vestiges such as
Pleiku prison, Stor village - The home of Hero
Nup, the historical vestige sites of Tay Son Thuong Dao
in An Khe and many former violent battlefield sites:
Victory of Dakpo, Dragon mountain and Iadrang valley
forever remembered in Vietnam history.
